Tips & tricks on choosing a film location in London
Ok, so you’ve found a location you like the look of… now what?
Here are a few tips we’ve learnt over the years iwhen choosing locations in London for productions.
1) Check the outside of the building
Don’t choose a location on the inside alone, you need to check what the outside looks like!
The outside needs to look as good as the inside… no client wants to turn up to a dump site, it’s a terrible first impression.
2) Check the noise levels
It’s great having a good looking set up but if the sound is bad… it’s useless.
We had a shoot recently where the studio was below a train line. We had to stop recording every time the train went over… we managed, but it looked really unprofessional.
3) Check the natural light
This sounds ridiculous but it’s so important!
We’ve had shoots that looked great when we set up, only to be ruined with the sun moving across the windows throughout the day.
Natural light is always great, just double check that the light won’t overpower the interview.
4) Is there parking?
The fourth and final tip is to make sure you find a location that offers parking, or offers parking permits for the local area.
If your clients are driving in you can’t not take them on a wild goose chase just before the shoot.
Section 4
How to film with drones in London.
Flying drones in London offers unique perspectives for video production, but it requires careful navigation of permissions, local laws, and choosing the right equipment and service providers. This section will guide you through the essentials of drone filming in the city, including specific considerations for different areas.
Permissions & local law
Flying a drone in London is a bit of a minefield. You always need to follow strict local drone laws and remember, you must always have permission from the landowner to fly.
Keep in mind that the UK’s five biggest airports are all in London servicing over 1,000,000 flights a year. This makes some areas of London outright banned for drone flight.
1) Register your drone with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
All drones weighing over 250 grams must be registered with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Complete a theory test and obtain an Operator ID.
2) Get permission to fly
For commercial drone operations, obtain permission from the CAA through an Operational Authorisation.
Check with local borough councils for specific restrictions in their areas. For example, flying in Royal Parks requires additional permissions.
Use apps like No Fly Drones to check if your take of zone is in a no-fly zone.
3) Follow the correct safety guidelines
Maintain a direct visual line of sight with your drone.
Do not fly higher than 120 meters (400 feet).
Keep a minimum distance of 50 meters from people, vehicles, and buildings not under your control.
Avoid flying near airports or helipads without specific authorization.
4) Use the drone safe app
This app provides up-to-date information on no-fly zones and other safety notices.
Flying a drone in London’s special areas.
Flying Drones Over the Thames:
Flying over the Thames can provide stunning visuals, but it's crucial to adhere to strict regulations.
Obtain specific permissions from the Port of London Authority.
Maintain clear communication with river traffic control to avoid interference with boats and other vessels (Launch Imagery).
Flying Drones in the City of London:
The City of London has stringent drone regulations due to its dense population and numerous high-rise buildings.
Permissions from both the CAA and the City of London Corporation are required.
Plan flights carefully to avoid congested areas and ensure public safety.
Flying Drones Over Streets & Roads:
It is generally illegal to fly a drone directly over roads due to the risk of accidents and interference with traffic.
Maintain a safe distance from roads and always ensure that the drone does not pose a hazard to vehicles or pedestrians.
If you need footage of streets or roads, consider alternative angles that do not require flying directly overhead.
Flying Drones in Parks:
London’s parks offer beautiful backdrops for drone footage, but each park has its own set of rules.
Permissions from the Royal Parks Authority are needed for places like Hyde Park and Regent's Park.
For other parks, contact the relevant borough council.
Adhere to any specific flying times and areas designated for drone use within the parks
