Celsius Rum - Crowdfunder Video in Cornwall

It was great to be invited to C Space, Newquay, last month as Celsius - the world’s first geothermal made rum - launched its first crowdfunding campaign to the world. C Space is a brilliant location overlooking Newquay’s famous harbour, a well-known local surf spot. Downstairs is one of those perfect open workspaces/event rooms, designed straight from the pages of Pinterest. Hanging plants, large old fashioned light bulbs, thick reclaimed wooden tables and a bar fills a discrete corer. This would be our home for the evening as Mathew Clifford spoke to a full audience eager to hear how the world of rum had harnessed energy from the centre of the earth.

The evening went well, Mathew spoke confidently about his technology and of his dream to transform the alcohol distillation industry from an energy intensive, polluter of the environment to a self-sufficient regenerative force. Matthew’s technology is patent pending and allows him to take waste heat from geothermal power plants and ‘amplify it’ to higher temperatures, temperatures high enough to power a distillery.

Matthew regularly speaks about his dad, a dentist who invented his way to becoming a local hero and more so, a leader of the profession as a whole. Matthew was raised to be curious and questioning, the perfect combination for his entrepreneurial future. Today, Mathew’s infection energy makes anyone in the room believe that the impossible is possible… something you’ll need when trying to transform the age-old industry of alcohol distillation.

Ian - Global Rum Ambassador.

To accompany Matthew at the event was business partner and world rum ambassador Ian Burrel. Ian’s forged his own career as the world’s only and first ambassador of the category of rum. Today, he knows everyone in the industry, and has deep roots in Jamaica, a place he would consider as his second home. As a kid, Ian’s mum would point to the front door and say “out there may be England, but in here… in here is Jamaica”. When Ian talks, he holds a room effortlessly, he’s a raconteur. For Celsius Ian is an investor and lead in defining the taste profile of the ‘Jamaican inspired rum’.

Ian spoke about the inspirations behind the taste profile of the rum and what the difference between a Jamaican flavoured rum and any other rum may be. He made a strict definition that the rum was Jamaican inspired and not truly Jamaican as a Jamaican rum must be made in Jamaica and not on UK shores, no matter how similar the taste notes.
